WWE have crowned a surprising inaugural NXT United Kingdom Women's Champion

Football News24/7

WWE's developmental brand, NXT, has long been one of the most exciting aspects of the entire company.

Although it doesn't perhaps get the recognition from all wrestling fans that both SmackDown and RAW get, it's still widely followed by a large number of WWE fans.

In fact, those that watch shows from both the main roster and NXT, are often left praising the company's developing talent, more than their established colleagues.

NXT UK

2018 has been yet another strong year for NXT - and it keeps growing from strength to strength.

In 2016, the UK brand was born and last month, its first televised shows were taped - and they'll air later this year on the WWE Network.

Since its introduction in December 2016, NXT UK has only had one title belt - the WWE United Kingdom Championship, which is currently defended by Pete Dunne.

Despite not having a title to challenge for, there have always been a number of talented women who share the same roster in NXT UK.

Thankfully, they'll finally be getting a belt of their own to challenge for, as Triple H finally announced the NXT UK Women̢۪s Championship - ahead of the latest tapings in Birmingham.

CROWNING A NEW CHAMPION

After waiting over a year and a half to actually unveil a championship for the Women's division, WWE have wasted no time crowing their inaugural winner.

At Sunday's NXT tapings, the show featured a tournament to decide the UK Women's first ever champion.

The final match was between Rhea Ripley and Toni Storm - with Ripley coming out victorious - as a spoiler video posted by WWE shows.

MAKING HISTORY

With the win, 21-year-old Ripley becomes her brand's first ever female champion, which is a fantastic accomplishment for someone so young.

But the opponent she beat in that final match may also be destined for just as much success.

Storm has also reached the final of the 2018 Mae Young Classic Tournament and will face Io Shirai at the all-women Evolution PPV in October.

Toni Storm stands tall after defeating an opponent in NXT

Kairi Sane, who won the tournament in 2017, in turn, earned a shot at the NXT Women's Championship that year - suggesting that Storm herself could get the same chance if she wins next month.
