Take cover: Met Office issues weather warning for potentially deadly thunderstorms in Gloucestershire

It's official.

Thunderstorms are heading to Gloucestershire and the Met Office has issued two weather warnings for Thursday and Friday.

The county is at the centre of the yellow warning zone and can expect rain, thunder and lighting and associated flooding and a risk to life in possible fast-flowing or deep floodwater.

The first yellow rain warning runs from 11am to 11.59pm on Thursday.

What the Met Office says we can expect on Thursday

  • Flooding of homes and businesses could happen quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds
  • Fast flowing or deep floodwater is possible, causing a danger to life

  • Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures and where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services
  • Power cuts might occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost
  • Some communities might become cut off if roads flood

What's going to happen on Thursday?

The Met Office says thunderstorms will move northwards into southern parts of England on Thursday morning with heavy showers.

And these could become slow moving and lead to torrential rain in some places.

There is the potential for 30-40 mm of rain to fall in an hour and perhaps as much as 60-80 mm in 2-3 hours.

As well as this, frequent lightning and large hail are possible.

The second yellow rain warning picks up at midnight to 9pm on Friday.

  • There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds
  • There is a small chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life

  • Where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services
  • Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures
  • There is a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost

What's going to happen on Friday?

We can expect scattered thunderstorms by the afternoon and persisting into the early evening.

These are likely to bring torrential r ain to some places with the potential for 20-30 mm of rain to fall in an hour and perhaps as much as 60 mm in a few hours.
