City making move for United target?

There have been reports United are interested in Fred. That is subject to conjecture but what isn’t is that City have already made an offer for the Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder, who is viewed as a long-term successor to Fernandinho.

What is going on with United's January transfer window

It has bee n a breathless 24 or 48 hours or so and the M.E.N. has had plenty of Sanchez and non-Sanchez stories with just over two weeks to go until deadline day. Here’s a rundown :

United have cooled their interest in Malcom and Jose Mourinho now covets a striker. The full story can be read here.

Arsenal have given up on Sanchez but not on another United target in Mesut Ozil. Here’s Ciaran Kelly’s line.

Aston Villa want Axel Tuanzebe on loan. That was filed before Mourinho’s update on Tuanzebe at yesterday’s press conference.

There will be more today, too. So while it is not a matchday, it is going to be busy.

The incentive to sign Sanchez this month

The league may be all but lost but a Mourinho team in the last 16 of the Champions League always has a chance. That would increase with the option of a world-class forward starved of Champions League football for a year.

Today's M.E.N. back page

Two clubs sometimes means two bylines. City have given United a free run at Alexis Sanchez and now it is up to them to decide if they want him.

The back pages aren't good for City

But they are good for United.

Mourinho has 'contempt' for Conte

Conte suggested Mourinho had ‘senile dementia’ before the Portuguese brought up Conte’s 2012 charge for match-fixing, of which he was cleared in 2016.

The Italian responded by suggesting Mourinho was a ‘little man’ and a ‘fake’ before vowing in midweek he would ‘not forget’ Mourinho’s jibes this month.

Mourinho believes Conte has insulted him twice and refused to prolong the verbal jousting.

What Mourinho said about Sanchez

Sanchez, 29, has entered the last six months of his Arsenal deal and is free to negotiate a pre-contract agreement ahead of moving on a free transfer at the end of the campaign. It is understood he is demanding £300,000-per-week and a signing-on fee of around £25million.

City are unwilling to meet Sanchez’s demands and are confident of securing a ‘big signing’ in the summer if the Chile international eludes them. United contacted Sanchez’s representatives after his deadline day move to City collapsed and have been offered the chance to sign Sanchez.

Mourinho was asked about the possibility of making a move for Sanchez after it emerged City had cooled their interest.

Mourinho press conference recap

If you missed it yesterday’s here’s a recap of the big points:

Mourinho refused to rule out making a move for Alexis Sanchez.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic should be back with the squad at the end of this month or the start of February.

Axel Tuanzebe might be sent out on loan but it’s down to Eric Bailly’s injury latest.

Dubai was a success.
