Philip Hammond admits Cabinet yet to decide what it wants UK's post-Brexit relationship with EU to look like

Theresa May’s Cabinet has still not decided what it wants the UK’s post-Brexit relationship with the European Union to look like, Philip Hammond has admitted.

The Chancellor said senior ministers had only had “general discussions” about the post-Brexit “end state” as he insisted it would be “premature” to hammer out the Government’s desired destination before the EU green lights trade talks.

Mr Hammond also suggested that the UK would pay the so-called Brexit bill regardless of whether or not the Government was able to agree to a trade deal with Brussels.

He said it would be “inconceivable” that Britain would walk away without meeting its obligations.

Mr Hammond’s apparent belief that the UK would settle its accounts with the EU even if future trading arrangements are not agreed appeared to put hi m at odds with Downing Street.
