Met Office warnings for snow and ice for Greater Manchester - this is the latest forecast

Storm Caroline started to batter the north of Scotland on Thursday night - and the latest forecasts from the Met Office say it's going to start heading south on Thursday night and Friday morning.

Yellow weather warnings for snow and ice have been issued from from midnight tonight to 6pm on Saturday and on Sunday between 4am and 11.55pm.

Snow levels however are expected to vary depending on where you are in the region.

A spokesperson for The Weather Channel said: “This low will move away on Thursday afternoon, dragging in a cold Arctic flow behind. “Temperatures will drop sharply below normal with overnight frosts, crisp winter sun and snow showers feeding through the Cheshire gap over the weekend before more widespread rain and snow moves in Sunday.”​

Here's the latest updated detail of the yellow weather warnings from th e Met Office over the Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Friday

Between 00:05 Fri 8th and 18:00 Sat 9th

During Friday, increasingly frequent snow showers already affecting parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England will extend across many other northern and western parts of the UK.

2-5 cm of snow is likely in places over the warning area. 10-20 cm is possible for some locations, mainly in northern Scotland, Northern Ireland, north Wales and perhaps the northwest Midlands.

Icy surfaces are also likely to be an additional hazard, especially overnight. The heaviest and most frequent snow showers will progressively become confined to northeast Scotland during Saturday. Possible travel delays on roads

Saturday

Possible travel delays on roads stranding some vehicles and passengers with possible delays and cancellations to rail and air travel. Some rural communities could be cut off and power supplies interrupted.

Probably some icy stretches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths. Some injuries from slips and falls on icy and snowy surfaces.

This warning has been updated to extend east to include more of the Pennines.

Sunday

Between 04:00 Sun 10th and 23:55 Sun 10th

A spell of heavy snow is possible over some central parts of the UK during Sunday. This could lead to road, rail and air travel delays, with the potential for vehicles to become stranded or public transport to be cancelled. Rural communities with limited access routes could become cut off.

When could it snow where you live in Greater Manchester?

Rochdale

Heavy snow is due to hit Rochdale between about midnight tonight and 2am, according to the Met Office website.

Lighter snow sprinkles are then expected to fall until around 4am.

Saturday should then stay fairly clear, with lighter snow overnight until about 3am on Sunday.

Heavy snow should then hit again between about 12pm and 3pm.

Oldham

It’s a similar outlook for Oldham, with heavy snow expected between midnight tonight, until about 1am, turning into lighter snow in the early hours of tomorrow morning.

Again light snow showers are expected overnight on Saturday.< /p>

Heavy snow is then expected to hit between 12pm and 6pm on Sunday.

Bury

Bury should see lighter snowfall tonight, with a bought of heavy snow between 1 and 2am.

Light snow should then hit between midnight and 3am on Sunday morning, with heavy snow hitting between 12pm and 3pm.

Salford

Light rain and sleet is expected to hit Salford between midnight tonight and 3am.

There should then be sporadic snow showers through the day tomorrow (Friday) and Saturday.

Sunday is forecast to see heavier snow between 12pm and 3pm on Sunday.

Manchester and the city centre

People living in the city centre should expect heavy snow at about 12am, then lighter snow into tomorrow morning.

There should be a light snow in the centre from about 6pm on Saturday until about 9am on Sunday morning.

Light snow could then fall anytime between the hours of 9am and 9pm on Sunday.

South Manchester

Lighter snow sh owers are forecast to hit the south of the city between midnight tonight and 3am.

Sporadic snow showers could then hit until about 9am.

You could miss the snow on Saturday but light snow showers forecast to hit between 9am and 6pm.

Tameside

Light snow is due to hit Tameside at about 12am, with a heavier bout of snow between 1am and 2am.

Then light snow could fall between 6pm Saturday and midnight that night.

Light snow could then hit between 9am and 9pm on Sunday.

Trafford

Trafford is expected to miss most of the snow tonight, with the odd light shower predicted between 1am and 5am overnight.

There could be the odd smattering of snow during the day on Friday.

Lighter snow could hit on Saturday evening until about midnight.

Heavy snow is forecast to hit between 12pm and 3pm on Sunday.

Predictions for the region differ depending on different forecasters.

Respected Norwegian forecasters yr.no predict snow showers will hold off until 6pm on Saturday, with flurries until midnight.

They also predict light snow between 6am and 6pm on Sunday.

Stockport

Stockport will miss most of the snow tonight, however flurries are expected overnight from midnight until 9am.

There will then be the odd shower throughout the day and on Saturday.

Heavy snow is then forecast to fall overnight on Saturday and throughout Sunday from 9pm until 6pm.

Wigan

Wigan is also set to only be hit by rain today, however snow and sleet is expected to fall overnight as temperatures drop. from around middnight.

Showers of sleet and snow will continue throughout Friday with temperatures reaching just 2C.

Snow flurries are forecast for Saturday morning with sleet and rain predicted in the afternoon.

Like the rest of the region however heavy showers are forecast for Sunday morning and afternoon.

Bolton

Bolton is unlikely to see any snow today with rain forecast for much of the day and night as Storm Caroline moves in.

However sleet and some heavy snow showers are forecast to fall in the early morning.
