The woman at the centre of the most memorable sex scandal of the 20th century has died at the age of 75.

Christine Keeler not only helped to bring down Harold Macmillan’s government by having an affair with John Profumo, a cabinet minister, but also became a defining image of the Sixties â€" when she was photographed in a coquettish pose sitting ba ckwards on a designer chair.

Her family confirmed that she had died on Monday night at the Princess Royal University Hospital in Farnborough Common, Kent. She was suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, a condition affecting the lungs. Seymour Platt, 46, her son, said that his mother had suffered for her involvement in the Profumo affair.
