Alex Rowley steps aside as interim Scottish Labour leader over misconduct claims from ex-girlfriend
Scottish Labourâs stand-in leader has stepped down from the role while the party investigates allegations that he bombarded his former partner with abusive messages during a three-year campaign of harassment.
Alex Rowley said he âtotallyâ refuted the allegations and would âtake all necessary steps to clear my nameâ. However, he announced that he would step aside while the inquiry is carried out.
His announcement came after a former girlfriend complained that he had âdestroyed" her life and said she was the âshadow of the woman I once wasâ.
The 49-year-old woman, who wished to remain anonymous, told a tabloid newspaper that Mr Rowley was a âruthless bullyâ who had become âobsessedâ with her. She said she complained to police in November 2014 but no action was taken.
The allegations are the most serious yet to emerge in Scottish politics since the sexual harassment scandal broke. They came ahead of the announcement this weekend of the victor in the contest to succeed Kezia Dugdale as the Scottish Labour leader.Source: Google News
