M5 crash leaves at least four people dead 'after lorry crashes through central reservation into oncoming traffic'
At least four people have died in a horror crash on the M5 after a lorry smashed through a central barrier into oncoming traffic.
According to witnesses a lorry travelling on the southbound carriageway smashed through the barrier and ploughed into "several vehicles."
Pictures shared on social media show a white truck's cab embedded in the bank and its tail stuck in the air.
Scores of motorists are trapped in six-mile long tailbacks, which are expected to last "late into this evening" after the horror smash in south Gloucestershire today.
Emergency crews raced to the scene just after 2.30pm and shut off the road between junction 16 near Almondsbury and junction 14 near Falfield.< figure>
Witness Rose Harris write on Twitter: "Bloody hell. Lorry travelling southbound on M5 just crossed central reservation into oncoming traffic. Does not look good."
Another witness, going by the name Littleglob wrote: "Stuck on M5 major incident truck crossed central barrier from southbound onto northbound, just after Bristol, M5 closed traffic stopped N&S."
diversions but parts of the M5 are likely to be closed for much of the afternoon and into the evening, according to the authorities.
An Avon and Somerset Police spokesman said: "A multi-agency operation is under way on the M5 in South Gloucestershire following a serious collision.
"We were called at just after 2.30pm to the collision between J15 and J14 northbound involving several vehicles, including a lorry.
"Sadly, at least four people have died.
"The motorway is closed in both directions between J16 and 14 and emergency services are working at the scene.
"The closure is likely to be in place for a considerable amount of time and weâd ask people to avoid the area."
There is heavy traffic on the A38 Gloucester Road in both directions, between Over Lane and Court Meadow and congestion on the MA38 is also stretching to the M5 Junction 16 (Aztec West) and on Over Lane to Ash Lane reports Bristol Post
It is currently being used as a diversion route, with the motorway closed between Junctions 16 and 14.
The slip roads into the M5 are also closed.
There are also long queues in Bristol as the A38 is being used as a diversion, which is causing d elays along Gloucester Road and the M32.
There are expected to be further delays throughout the area as today is 'moving in day' for thousands of students heading to UWE.
